Privacy policy

1 1.What we collect

• Information you give us: your first name, if you add one; voice recordings when you practise pronunciation; words you look up or add; and messages you send us, such as mistake reports.
• If you create an account: your email address, the identifier Apple or Google gives us when you sign in with them, and your learning progress (lessons, flashcards, your own decks and words, your streak, study time, your study settings and onboarding answers, and your first name, if you add one), so that it is saved in your account and on your other devices.
• Information collected when you use Kaeru: usage information, device information and identifiers, approximate location derived from your IP address, purchase information, crash reports, and advertising measurement information.
• Our website uses cookies that it needs to work, for example for your language choice, for security and to keep you signed in, and loads some of its code from a content delivery service.

2 2.How we use it, and why we may

• To provide Kaeru and your subscription, including lessons, audio, pronunciation scoring and reminders: to perform our contract with you.
• To keep your account and show your progress on your other devices and on our website: to perform our contract with you.
• To personalise Kaeru, for example with your name: to perform our contract with you.
• To understand how Kaeru is used, fix problems and improve it: our legitimate interest in running and improving Kaeru.
• To measure our advertising: our legitimate interest in growing Kaeru.
• To answer your messages and requests: our legitimate interest in helping you.
• To meet our legal obligations: those obligations.

You do not have to give us your name or voice recordings. Without microphone access, pronunciation practice does not work.

3 3.Who receives it

We share information with service providers that host, store and deliver our content, and that provide analytics, subscription management and subscription screens, crash reporting, speech processing, lesson and audio generation, and advertising measurement. They must protect your information at least as well as this policy does. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or as part of a sale or merger of our business.

Some providers process information outside the UK and the EEA, for example in the United States. Where the law requires it, we use the safeguards it provides. You can ask us for details.

4 4.How long we keep it

We keep information for as long as we need it for the purposes above. Then we delete or anonymise it. If you delete your account in Kaeru, we delete its information 30 days later. Until then, signing in again restores it.

5 5.Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask us to access, correct, delete or export your personal data, or to restrict its use. You can object to any use that is based on our legitimate interests. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time; this does not affect what we did before. You can delete your account in the app, on your account page. To use these rights, email support@kaeru-jp.app. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or to the data protection authority where you live.

6 6.Tracking

Kaeru and its website do not respond to "Do Not Track" signals. Our advertising measurement partners may collect information about your use of Kaeru and of other apps and websites over time.

7 7.Changes

We may update this policy. We will post the new version on this page with its effective date.
